Dwalin (portrayed by Graham McTavish) is Balin's younger brother and appears in all Hobbit films, An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies. Dwalin appears as third-in-command of the company and Thorin's best friend since childhood and one of his and Bilbo's twelve companions on the journey to reclaim Erebor from Smaug. While a minor character in the book, Dwalin's role in the films were bigger.

Dwalin is based on the character of the same name from ''The Hobbit'' by J. R. R. Tolkien and his name is taken from a dwarf from Norse mythology.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Edit

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Edit

Dwalin first appears when Bilbo returns stating there are Orcs leagues away and that they will soon track them. Later, he is seen quarreling with Nori, as he suggests that they should leave Beorn's before they are caught. However, Dwalin tells Nori he will not succumb to a beast such as Beorn.

Deleted scenes Edit

Dwalin appears in one deleted scene, where he states sarcastically about the "great king Thranduil" about treating travelers in the woods, with Thranduil stating, "Only those who annoy me."

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Edit

Relationships Edit

Thorin Oakenshield Edit

While in the books they have a big age difference, in the film universe, Thorin and Dwalin are best friends since birth.

Balin Edit

Nori Edit

Though they have little screentime, Dwalin and Nori were known not to stand each other. This is also shown in the extended version of The Desolation of Smaug, where both of them are fighting about weather or not to retreat from Beorn's before Gandalf breaks it up. During An Unexpected Journey, Dwalin glared at Nori for stealing from Rivendell.
