Gandalf is a character in the 1977 adaptation of The Hobbitand the 1980 film,The Return of the King.He was voiced by John Huston in both films.

Background[]

Gandalf first comes to Arda during the Second Age. He became friends with all races, but not to those who were affiliated with Sauron. Sauron was eventually defeated by Isildur, and then took form of a giant eye. Later on in the Third Age, Gandalf was in Dol Guldur and came across Thorin's father, Thráin who gave Gandalf the map and key to the hidden door. He also knew Bilbo when the boy was very young.

The Return of the King[]

Gandalf again narrates the film, as it served as a sequel to The Hobbit. He is also again voiced by John Huston. Prior to the siege, Gandalf was accompanied by Peregrin "Pippin" Took. Also, because Denethor lost his mind, Gandalf now has to act in charge of the army. After Pippin warns him what Denethor is ordering, the two learn that Denethor has been watching through the Palantir. He is later confronted by the Witch-king of Angmar.

After the conflict of the One Ring is over, Gandalf goes to the Grey Havens with Elrond, Bilbo and Frodo.

His role remains the same in Return of the King as in the book

Physical Appearance[]

When Gandalf came to middle-earth, he took form of an older man. He wore a grey robes with a hood acted like a hat. He also had a silver scarf, blue eyes, and grey hair. He also had bushy eyeborws. In Return of the King, Gandalf now has white hair and no longer grey. He also is shown wearing white robes as well.

In the animated films, Gandalf is depicted as being calm and friendly to those not affiliated with Sauron. Some of them said Gandalf was meddlesome wizard who shouldn't of put his mind in mortal affairs. Gandalf is also a natural born leader, as he leads Gondor into their He was however wise and helpful to those in need. He also cared a great deal of his friends, particularly Bilbo and Frodo.

Gandalf and Bilbo were old friends going back to when the hobbit was still a child. He saw potential in young Bilbo Baggins, noting how adventurous he was than the other hobbits. He would remember the Istar as "Gandalf the wandering wizard".  Gandalf later appears to Bilbo, who is all grown up, convincing him to go on a journey. He would often act as a mentor  and Bilbo's father figure.

Later, Gandalf reveals he is very fond of Bilbo, commenting he is a fine person, and wouldn't like it if something bad happened to him.
