Sam Gamgee was born to Bell Goodchild and her husband, Hamfast "The Gaffer" Gamgee and was the youngest of five children. He was childhood friends with
Frodo Baggins, who was the "nephew" of Bilbo Baggins, who taught Sam to read and write.
